Injury prevention on the field starts in the weight room

Often, when an athlete gets injured, there wasn't anything special about that play, that tackle, or that sidestep. They've done that movement a hundred times, and the injury most likely occurred due to fatigue or from overtraining on the field or in the weight room. The weight room is where all athletes build their foundation but have the least amount of visibility and supervision while their bodies are under the most stress. This lack of guidance often leads to them to unknowingly overtrain or overexert themselves, ultimately being the main cause of future injuries.

You might ask yourself, what is a proven methodology that I can use to give my athletes feedback in the weight room when I’m not around? In comes velocity-based training, or VBT for short. VBT is almost exactly like what it sounds like. It uses the velocity of each rep to determine set correctness and if the load of an exercise is right for you. VBT also helps amplify the intent of movements by demanding a consistent standard and providing immediate feedback on execution.

No matter if they are lifting heavy or going for reps, VBT gives them ideal speed ranges to target. If they can’t stay in them, it’s time to stop lifting as an injury is right around the corner. This enables them to see if that weight is right for them in the first set, instead of going through an entire exercise without knowing how each set is affecting them. You can prevent overtraining sooner than ever before, leading to shorter recovery times, happier athletes, and better results for the team. With all the benefits that VBT provides, it’s no surprise as to why it’s becoming the leading training methodology used by some of the most successful athletic programs across the nation.
